Pair a book with a toy to make for a great gift

I love bringing books into therapy session and gifting books as well.

Books help develop and expand language skills. They help enhance imagination, build an understanding of story elements, and allow us to learn about people, places and events outside of their own lives.

Even better, I love it when I can get creative and combine a good book with a related toy.

I love doing this in therapy sessions, but I think the combination can also make for a great gift!

This is because the story can then continue past the last page. It gives kids a chance to use the book, the toys and their imagination to make the story come to life.

Looking for a gift?

Here are some highly recommended book and toy combination ideas for preschool children up to second grade.

“Sneezy the Snowman” book with a melting snowman toy

“Sneezy the Snowman is cold, cold, cold. To warm up, he drinks cocoa, sits in a hot tub, stands near a warm fire–and melts! But the children know just what to do to build him up again–and make him feel “just right”.

The snowman kit includes reusable melting putty, plus a hat, scarf, buttons, eyes, nose, and arms. Use putty to shape and decorate a snowman then watch it melt into a puddle at room temperature.

“Pete the Kitty” book with doctor kit

“Oh no! Pete the Kitty has a tummy ache. Good thing his dad knows just what to do. It’s time to go to the doctor! Except Pete may be a teensy-weensy bit nervous about his first visit to the doctor. With the help of his dad, Pete discovers the doctor isn’t scary. Beginning readers will easily relate to Pete the Kitty as he overcomes his fear of going to the doctor's office.”

25-piece doctor’s kit play set with realistic pretend play patient care essentials to examine and treat patients. A fun and engaging way to ease any feelings of stress associated with a visit to the doctor and to encourage imaginative, nurturing, and empathetic play

Pizza-themed book with play-doh pizza making kit

“When Pete is in an especially bad mood because it is raining and he can't play ball with his friends, his father decides that it might cheer his son up "to be made into a pizza." The boy is placed on the kitchen table where he is kneaded, tossed, and covered with various toppings”

Using the pizza play food set, your little chef can slice up some oven-fresh fun again and again

“Trashy Town” book with garbage truck toy

“Meet Mr. Gilly. He cleans up Trashy Town. There’s trash at the pizza parlor, trash at the school, and trash at every house. It’s a big job, but Mr. Gilly does it with a big truck, a big smile, and loads of style.”

The 16 inch long garbage truck features button operated blinking lights and various sound effects. A motorized arm lifts the garbage can and empties it into the back compartment.

“Thank you, Mr. Panda” book with toy presents

“Generous Mr. Panda is giving away presents to all his animal friends, but they aren't being very grateful about the gifts they receive. It may be because the presents aren't quite right. This book teaches about the importance of saying "thank you" and recognizing that it's the thought that counts most of all behind every gift.”

Unbox these adorable plastic present boxes to work on countless skills like counting, color recognition, labeling, pretend play and so on.
