Why are jokes good for kids?

Learning is serious business, but telling jokes can be a seriously effective tool for learning.

Telling jokes can be really good for us, both emotionally and mentally.

Just a few helpful benefits:

  1. Fostering a sense of humor and laughing helps reduce stress

  2. Builds confidence with speaking in front of others

  3. Jokes often have a play on words - allowing kids a chance to explore things like puns, double meanings, irony and new vocabulary

  4. Builds a child’s control of their language - putting words and speech inflections together a certain way to deliver something that makes others laugh and smile

  5. Encourages kids to think outside of the box and view things from a different angle in order to solve a riddle or joke – which also helps develop their creativity, flexible thinking, perspective taking and critical thinking skills

Do you plan on seeing kids for the holidays or an upcoming kid-friendly gathering?

I highly recommend gifting them a joke book or bringing a book of your own!

Jokes can be a great way to start conversations and increases togetherness. It also can be a fun thing for all ages to do to build language and cognitive skills.

Highly recommend the following joke books for various ages:

  1. Hilarious jokes for 6 year olds

  2. Hilarious jokes for 7 year olds

  3. Hilarious jokes for 8 year olds

  4. Hilarious jokes for 9 year olds

  5. Hilarious jokes for 10 year olds

  6. Hilarious jokes for 11 year olds

  7. Hilarious jokes for 12 year olds

Highly recommend for 7+ year old kids to help them write their own books:

LOL 101: A Kid’s Guide to Writing Jokes

Another fun idea to do with your kids:

Help them create their own joke book using jokes that you both researched online.

Build ownership by allowing the child to choose the pictures and font type for the cover page.

You and/or your child can write the jokes inside.

This task can be easily adjusted based on the child’s age and abilities.

For the past few weeks, my boys have been telling jokes to our doorman, neighbors, kind people in the elevator, anyone interested in hearing a joke, etc. for weeks. It has been so sweet to watch them confidently recite a joke that they picked and rehearsed. It has brought a lot of smiles and laughs to many!
